Dr Nick Neave looks at the difference between “good” and “bad” dancing

Scientists say they’ve carried out the first rigorous analysis of dance moves that make men attractive to women.

The researchers say that movements associated with good dancing may be indicative of good health and reproductive potential.

“When you go out to clubs people have an intuitive understanding of what makes a good and bad dancer,” said co-author Dr Nick Neave, an evolutionary psychologist at Northumbria University, UK.

“What we’ve done for the very first time is put those things together with a biometric analysis so we can actually calculate very precisely the kinds of movements people focus on and associate them with women’s ratings of male dancers.”

Dr Neave asked young men who were not professional dancers, to dance in a laboratory to a very basic drum rhythm and their movements with 12 cameras.

These movements were then converted into a computer-generated cartoon – an avatar – which women rated on a scale of one to seven. He was surprised by the results.

“We thought that people’s arms and legs would be really important. The kind of expressive gestures the hands [make], for example. But in fact this was not the case,” he said.

“We found that (women paid more attention to) the core body region: the torso, the neck, the head. It was not just the speed of the movements, it was also the variability of the movement. So someone who is twisting, bending, moving, nodding.”

Movements that went down terribly were twitchy and repetitive – so called “Dad dancing”.

Dr Neave’s aim was to establish whether young men exhibited the same courtship movement rituals in night clubs as animals do in the wild. In the case of animals, these movements give information about their health, age, their reproductive potential and their hormone status.

“People go to night clubs to show off and attract the opposite sex so I think it’s a valid way of doing this,” Dr Neave explained.

“In animals, the male has to be in good physical quality to carry out these movements. We think the same is happening in humans and certainly the guys that can put these movements together are going to be young and fit and healthy.”

Dr Neave also took blood samples from the volunteers. Early indications from biochemical tests suggest that the men who were better dancers were also more healthy.

A few years ago, there were studies saying that coffee may be related to cancer. This prompted people to avoid drinking the caffeinated drink. A couple of years after that study, researches have recounted the study quoting that the investigation is flawed. Current research have indicated that coffee can give the body a lot of benefits.

Harvard researchers are saying that coffee, when drank regularly, may be a remedy for diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and colon cancer. It might even improve your mood and treat daily headache problems. It could even be drank to lower risk of cavities.

Studies show that regular coffee drinkers are 80 percent scarcer to have Parkinson’s disease. While 2-cups-a-day drinkers can lessen the risk of cancer of the colon by 25 percent and 80 percent in liver cirrhosis risk. It can also slash the risk of gallstones by half. There are even studies showing that individuals who smoke and drink heavily, have less heart and liver damage as a result of their coffee intake.

So, what causes these benefits? It is the anti-oxidants, and surprisingly from the caffeine also. Currently, drugs for curing Parkinson’s disease are being developed. These drugs have a derivative of caffeine as their component. Coffee also has chlorogenic acid and tocophenols which are antioxidants. These mineral components can improve insulin sensitivity. When we speak about insulin sensitivity, it is the body’s response to insulin.

There were studies conducted in Europe citing that the trigonelline, the compound that is why coffee smells good and has bitter taste, also has advantages. It may be both antibacterial and anti-adhesive. These stop the formation of dental cavities.

But can everybody drink coffee?

Regrettably, not everybody is in a position to drink coffee. Individuals with bladder and kidney problems, existing diabetes, gallstones, heart problems, high cholesterol levels, hypoglycemia and generalized panic and /or anxiety attacks should avoid coffee drinking altogether. Averting coffee drinking is also advised to expectant women and those with high risk of brittle bones.

For pregnant women, if coffee cannot be ignored, then it is recommended just to drink 1 or 2 cups a day. Infertility, miscarriages and low birth weight among babies are the primary rationality why pregnant women are recommended against drinking coffee.

Brittle bones patients are likewise advised not to coffee. Coffee reduces the capability of bones to absorb the necessary minerals, making the bones weak and in risk of brittle bones. But the effects may be reduced if milk is combined with coffee.

Research conducted on coffee has concluded that is overall healthy, confirming what many have believed since coffee began being consumed.

Coffee has been drunken by people for at for over a thousand years. Coffee was discovered by an Arab in the ninth century in the Ethiopian highlands. The person discovered it when he noticed that his goats became “more lively” after eating berries from the coffea plant. He took the coffea plant back to Arabia (Yemen now) with him where it was distributed throughout the Middle East.
Coffee was first used for religious reasons. Muslims made wine from the pulp of the coffee berries. This beverage was called as qishr (it’s called kisher now ) and it was used as a wine substitute in religious ceremonies. It’s unclear, as to why a wine substitute would be necessary for a religion that condones alcohol altogether, but it can probably traced to an old Muslim legend.

The old Muslim legend alleges that the archangel Gabriel offered a cup of coffee to the prophet Mohamed , who was ill. Coffee not only made him recover but it gave him enough energy to defeat 40 horsemen and sleep with 40 women. Unfortunately, modern doctors have found no evidence whatsoever for coffee’s strength and libido enhancing powers that are presented in this story.

However, since coffee is one of the most studied substances on the planet, numerous studies have illuminated its effects.

In addition to coffee’s known effect on stimulating the central nervous system, coffee also;
*Increases cognitive performance, especially in elderly people.
*Speeds up the breathing process and metabolism,
*Helps relieve some symptom of asthma
*Helps relieve some migraines when used with painkillers and other migraine medication
*helps to remove ‘cholesterol plaque’ –the substance that clogs arteries.
* Contains Vitamins that include calcium, phosphorus, iron and many other substances that are necessary for the human body.
*Coffee prevents dental caries(cavities ). The tannins in coffee interfere with bacteria’s
ability to access sugar for food. The downside to this, is that coffee stains the teeth.

Coffee can be taken during pregnancy in light moderation. There is some concern that it can cause iron deficiency in the infant if the mother drinks too much of it.

Contrary to popular belief, coffee doesn’t raise the blood pressure, even in those with heart disease. Coffee shouldn’t be taken along with tobacco and alcohol because together they can cause higher cholesterol levels in the blood.

If you drink coffee, smoke, drink liquor and don’t exercise, you’re likely to develop heart disease.
Using coffee filters offsets the small increase in body cholesterol caused by coffee by trapping the two substances that cause a slight increase in cholesterol, cafestol and kahweol, from the coffee.

Like with most things, an excessive amount of coffee will be fatal. Experts put that amount at around 100 cups of coffee in a twenty four hour period.
